You won't necessarily lose your house or car if you file for bankruptcy.
In Alberta, if you want to keep these assets, you can elect to continue making payments toward your mortgage and/or vehicle financing. If you cannot afford to continue these payments, you can choose to surrender them and if there is a shortfall, that will be included in your insolvency process.
If there is significant non-exempt equity in your house and/or car, you can elect to "repurchase" this amount from your bankrupt estate in order to retain possession of your asset(s). If you cannot afford to do so, then it may be necessary to assist the Trustee in liquidating the asset(s).
The choice is yours, based on your ability to pay.
